چکیده

STRIPS-like languages (SLLs) have fostered immense advances in automated planning. In practice, SLLs are used to express highly abstract versions of real-world planning problems, leading to more concise models and faster solution times. Unfortunately, as we show in the paper, simple ways of abstracting solvable real-world problems may lead to SLL models that are unsolvable, SLL models whose solutions are incorrect with respect to the real-world problem, or models that are inexpressible in SLLs. There is some evidence that such limitations have restricted the applicability of AI planning technology in the real world, as is apparent in the case of task and motion planning in robotics. We show that the situation can be ameliorated by a combination of increased expressive power—for example, allowing angelic nondeterminism in action effects—and new kinds of algorithmic approaches designed to produce correct solutions from initially incorrect or non-Markovian ab-

Towards An Algebraic Formulation of Domain Definitions using Parameterised Machines

Abstractly specifying, rapidly creating, and re-using models of domain structure are desirable goals for knowledge engineering in AI Planning. However, while planning algorithms, and now knowledge engineering itself, are maturing areas of research, the descriptions used to formulate dynamic domain descriptions is under researched. In this paper we describe on-going work attempting to establish ...

A Diagrammatic Inter-Lingua for Planning Domain Descriptions

Sentential and diagrammatic representations are two different formalisms for describing domains and problems. Sentential descriptions are usually more expressive than diagrammatic ones, but tend to present a more complex and less intuitive notation. All modern planning domain description languages are sentential. The complexity of sentential formalisms has been of hindrance to the wider dissemi...

Planning For Web Services the Hard Way

In this paper we outline a framework for performing automated discovery, composition and execution of web services based solely on the information available in interface descriptions and service directories. In our framework we do not rely on the existence of semantic mark-up in service descriptions, thus making our approach “hard”. (From a planning perspective, we tackle the problem of plannin...

Functionalism, computationalism, and mental states

Some philosophers have conflated functionalism and computationalism. I reconstruct how this came about and uncover two assumptions that made the conflation possible. They are the assumptions that (i) psychological functional analyses are computational descriptions and (ii) everything may be described as performing computations. I argue that, if we want to improve our understanding of both the m...

The Influence of Ibn Sìnå on Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and His Followers

This article is an investigation into the nature of the Sufi metaphysics of Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and his followers. In contrast to previous scholars, who have considered Qinawì to be dismissive of philosophy in a way similar to Ghazålì, the author shows that in fact philosophical metaphysics, and in particular the formulations of Ibn Sìnå, had a great impact on Qinawì and his followers in the sch...
